Today’s Rufus’s second birthday! To celebrate, we dug up some photos of Rufus as a puppy and tried (with indeterminate success) to recreate them. He’s grown up so much!

Rufus really likes to pick up sticks and carry them around on his walks. He does this so regularly that people now recognize him as The Stick Dog.

So you might say that sticks…are his shtick.

Someone cut his foot and got a little infection inside the pad of his paw. It’s nothing serious, but it could become serious if he kept on licking it constantly.

So after a trip to the vet, out came…the cone of shame.

The cone made him very sad. It also made him alternately a) paralyzed with fear or b) hugely destructive. He was terrified to move, and when he did move he banged into everything, including my shins and the mug I left on the coffee table. It was also uncomfortable for him to lay down. So he spent the afternoon standing very still and looking pathetic.

Luckily, one of the specialty pet stores in town sells a much more comfortable nylon cone that keeps him from being able to reach his front paw. So this is what he’ll be outfitted with for the next four or five days:

He’d still prefer to not be wearing a cone at all, of course, but he seems to feel that this is at least acceptable.

We call this condition “Dobby ears”.
